Chapter X

Lady Stockton was on the prowl. She questioned every guest trying to find someone who had seen the individual who pushed Lady Jane over the edge at the abbey’s ruins. However, in all the excitement, no one had seen any guest act suspiciously, nor was anyone seen coming from the staircase. But she found gold when one of the young ladies came to her.

“Lady Tabitha, what can I do for you?” Lady Stockton was abrupt and almost rude by this time as she was exhausted and irate.

“My lady, I need to tell you that I was the one who poured ink all over Lady Jane’s underthings.”

“Why would you do such a thing? I don’t picture you doing such a mean spirited thing to anyone.” She added with a sneer, “You’re too timid.”

Lady Tabitha flushed in embarrassment and shame then agreed with Lady Stockton. “I have been friends with one of the ladies for ten years, and my friend is bound and determined to wed Lord Windmere. She wants to be a duchess, but I fear her greatest desire is the vast wealth he will inherit when his father dies. She has been horribly jealous of Lady Jane since the first day and has maneuvered events in the hope that Lady Jane would become discouraged and leave the house party early.”

“Was the spilled tea and the horse throwing her part of those maneuverings?” Lady Stockton was nearly shouting at her at this point, and Tabitha was getting nervous looking at her.

Very quietly, Lady Tabitha said, “Yes.”

“Why on earth, young lady, would you do such things to Lady Jane?”

“Oh, no, I didn’t do them. I was only involved with the ink and that…due to my being threatened,” she admitted.

Lady Stockton just looked at her until Lady Tabitha lowered her eyes to her lap.

“Lady Penelope is the friend that instigated all this violence, isn’t she?”

Tabitha jumped when she realized her hostess was onto her friend’s misdeeds but wouldn’t confirm what she said.

“Never mind. I know it’s her. I’ve seen the way she looks at Lady Jane and even Lord Windmere. She’s a vicious creature to have plotted all that’s happened. Did she do all the rest?”

Tabitha still wouldn’t answer her but jumped again when Lady Stockton stated that she knew that Penelope was the one who pushed Lady Jane through the abbey window. “I see that I guessed correctly. And the other two instances? Were the St. George twins involved in those as well?”

Lady Stockton wasn’t surprised when Lady Tabitha still said nothing. She sighed, then said, “Pack your bags, Lady Tabitha. You’re going home tonight. I will countenance no guests who violate the rights of any of the other guests. I do thank you for telling me about the ink incident and will not say anything to anyone else. But…you will go home. You will not be welcomed back to my home ever. Lady Jane has proven to be a real lady this week by not complaining or pointing fingers. She didn’t deserve anything that happened to her.
